“The Fire Keeps Burning,” Says Kolkata Mother House on 75 Years of Missionaries of Charity

Kolkata, October 8, 2025: “Every year, all our communities around the world observe this day with adoration and thanksgiving,” said the Mother House, speaking to Catholic Connect about the 75th Jubilee of the Missionaries of Charity. “It is something Mother herself began, and we continue to follow it faithfully. Wherever we are, in India or abroad, we come together in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament to thank God for His blessings on our congregation.”

The congregation marked seventy-five years since its founding by St. Mother Teresa on 7 October 1950, observing the day with solemn prayer and thanksgiving. While the world has changed in countless ways since 1950, the Missionaries of Charity have remained faithful to their founding purpose. “We don’t start new projects,” the sister said. “We keep doing what Mother began with the same faith and the same zeal.”

Reflecting on the congregation’s journey over the decades, the sister emphasised its enduring zeal. “From the beginning till now, the fire keeps burning,” she said. “We continue to serve with the same love and dedication Mother Teresa taught us.” She described the sisters’ daily outreach, especially their work among the destitute on streets and at railway stations. “We go out every day to bring food packets and care to those who have no one,” she explained.

She recalled a poignant incident from the previous day, when the sisters brought in a man from the streets who sadly passed away before reaching their home. “This is the reality we see often,” she said quietly. “There are still so many who suffer from extreme wounds, neglect, and poverty. The need for our mission has not changed. It remains as urgent as ever.”

This year’s Jubilee included the unveiling of a statue of Mother Teresa in front of the Mother House, a symbolic gesture honouring the saint’s life and mission. “The statue reminds us of our call to continue her work with the same humility and love,” the sister explained.

The event, open to the public, drew Members of Parliament, Members of the Legislative Assembly, government officials, benefactors, and numerous members of the poor communities served by the Missionaries of Charity. “It was a simple yet grace-filled day,” she added. “Everyone, the rich and poor alike joined us in prayer and thanksgiving.”

Today, the Missionaries of Charity operate 754 homes in 138 countries, serving the poorest of the poor. They run orphanages, hospices, leper colonies, and outreach programs for the homeless and destitute. Their work continues to reflect the unwavering dedication and spirit of St. Mother Teresa across the globe.
