HYDERABAD, November 5, 2026: Canonists from the Telugu-speaking region examined the role of diocesan curias in advancing the Church’s mission through justice, inclusivity and synodal governance at a regional seminar held in Hyderabad on November 4.
Organised by the Telugu Catholic Bishops Council (TCBC) Regional Commission for Canon Law, the seminar focused on The Role of Diocesan Curia in the Light of Praedicate Evangelium and was held at Montfort Bhavan.
Sixteen participants attended the programme despite disruptions caused by the recent twin cyclones in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The sessions were also livestreamed to enable canonists unable to travel to participate online.
Archbishop Udumala Bala of Visakhapatnam, chairman of the Regional Commission for Canon Law, delivered the keynote address, explaining the significance of Praedicate Evangelium, Pope Francis’ apostolic constitution reforming the Roman Curia. He highlighted the need for Church administration to reflect greater inclusivity, collaboration and synodality.
The seminar featured presentations by Fr Talari Bala Raju, Fr Dr Polisetty Jojappa and Fr Dr Velangani Rao Dola MSFS.
The sessions examined the responsibilities of diocesan curias, special matrimonial cases involving the Pauline privilege and marriage in favour of the faith, and proposed amendments to the Code of Canon Law recommended by the Synod Canon Law Commission. Discussions also considered the implications of these proposals for the Telugu-speaking region.
The programme included three morning sessions, followed by group discussions and a panel interaction in the afternoon. Participants shared their views on the practical application of canon law and the role of diocesan structures in the Church's ministry of justice.
The seminar concluded with an evaluation session and recommendations for future programmes. Participants emphasised the importance of strengthening their canonical knowledge and exercising their responsibilities in accordance with Church law and a synodal approach.
Fr Thomas Kurma, secretary of the TCBC Regional Commission for Canon Law, coordinated the seminar in collaboration with canonists from the region.
