Judea , November 5, 2026 : Some of the most beautiful moments in salvation history began with faith, patience, and trust in God. Saint Elizabeth, the mother of Saint John the Baptist and a relative of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is remembered for her unwavering faith and the miraculous birth of her son in her old age. Her story reminds Catholics that God's promises are fulfilled in His time and that every life has a purpose in His divine plan.
Saint Elizabeth was married to Zechariah, a Jewish priest who served in the Temple in Jerusalem. According to the Gospel of Luke, both were righteous before God and faithfully observed His commandments. Elizabeth belonged to the priestly family of Aaron, and she was a relative of the Virgin Mary.

Despite their devotion, Elizabeth and Zechariah remained childless for many years. In their society, this brought considerable sadness and social difficulty. Yet they continued to trust in God and remained faithful in prayer.
One day, while Zechariah was serving in the Temple, the Angel Gabriel appeared and announced that Elizabeth would give birth to a son. The child was to be named John and would prepare the people for the coming of the Lord. Although Zechariah struggled to believe the message because of their advanced age, God's promise was fulfilled.
One of the most memorable moments in Elizabeth's life was her meeting with Mary. After the Annunciation, Mary travelled to visit her relative, who was already six months pregnant.
When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leapt in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. She joyfully exclaimed:
“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!” (Luke 1:42).
Elizabeth recognised the extraordinary blessing God had given Mary and called her “the mother of my Lord.” Her words became an important part of the Catholic prayer known as the Hail Mary.
Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months, sharing a beautiful period of faith, companionship, and mutual encouragement.
When Elizabeth's time came, she gave birth to a son. Her neighbours and relatives rejoiced with her. During the naming ceremony, Elizabeth insisted that the child be called John, as the angel had instructed. When Zechariah confirmed the name in writing, his speech returned, and he praised God.
Their son became Saint John the Baptist, the prophet who prepared the way for Jesus Christ.
Saint Elizabeth teaches us to remain faithful even when prayers seem unanswered. Her patience reminds us that God's timing is different from our own.
Her encounter with Mary also shows the importance of encouraging others, recognising God's blessings, and sharing joy with humility. She teaches families to nurture faith and trust in God's purpose for their children.
May her example inspire us to live with patience, gratitude, and confidence in God's promises.
