Pilar, Goa, May 5, 2026: In response to rising communal tensions in Goa, Sneh Sangam, an interfaith celebration of festivals, was organised by Sadbhav, an initiative of the Society of Pilar, on Buddha Poornima at the Pilar Pilgrim Centre, bringing together members of diverse religious communities to promote coexistence, tolerance, and mutual respect.
The gathering emphasised shared human values through cultural exchange and dialogue among representatives of Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, and Jainism. Shiren Sidwa from the Zoroastrian community noted that the event provided an opportunity for diverse communities to come together at a time of increasing communal tensions in the state.
Expressions from different traditions were presented through prayer, music, dance, and theatre. Members of the Zoroastrian community rendered traditional prayers in the ancient Avestan language, while a student from Tajikistan studying at Goa University performed the Badakhshani dance associated with Nowruz, the Persian New Year. Students from the Muslim community of Pilar and Panjim presented a skit highlighting trust as a bridge between communities, and children from the Jain community offered an invocation through dance. Christian participants contributed musical performances reflecting themes of faith and peace.
Dr. Ida Mukherjee, a certified Christian counsellor, spoke on “Festivals and Food,” stating that food becomes a symbol of love, hospitality, and togetherness. She also remarked on the inclusive atmosphere of the gathering, where all traditions were equally respected.
Shoaib Shaikh, Director of Goa College of Skill Development, spoke on “Festivals Promote Fraternity,” emphasising that festivals across religions create opportunities to share joy and strengthen bonds within communities.
Participants also shared festive meals representing different traditions, encouraging interaction and appreciation across faiths. Reflecting on this, Dr. Mukherjee noted that while many traditions were represented, the shared experience was marked by a common spirit of affection.
The event was described as a meaningful cultural exchange, highlighting how diverse religious traditions can foster unity, peace, and mutual understanding, with participants appreciating the shared experience of coexistence.
