TIRUCHIRAPPALLI, July 10, 2026: A 29-year-old seminarian preparing for the Catholic priesthood was found dead at a church in Tiruchirappalli on Wednesday, prompting police to register a case of unnatural death and launch an investigation.

Justin Prabakaran, a native of Amirpalayam in Virudhunagar district, was found unresponsive in a room at Jeganmadha Church near K.K. Nagar in the early hours of Wednesday. He had been undergoing priestly formation for the past eight years and had attended various stages of formation in Kolkata, Bengaluru and Chennai.

According to sources, Justin had recently travelled to Tiruchirappalli to undergo a routine medical examination as part of his formation programme. Those familiar with the situation said he appeared emotionally distressed during this period. After completing the medical check-up, he briefly travelled to Bengaluru before returning to Tiruchirappalli on Tuesday night.

Church personnel discovered him in his room at around 5 a.m. on Wednesday and alerted the police.

Officers from K.K. Nagar Police Station shifted the body to the Government Hospital in Tiruchirappalli for a post-mortem examination. Following the autopsy, the body was handed over to his family members and church authorities for the funeral.

Based on a complaint filed by A. Kulanthaisamy, president of the Marian Servant Congregation, police registered a case of unnatural death under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Investigations are continuing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the death.
