Saint Peter Claver: The Jesuit Who Became a Servant of the Enslaved

A Young Jesuit Called to Mission

Peter Claver was born in Catalonia and entered the Society of Jesus at the age of 20. While studying philosophy in Mallorca, he developed a close friendship with Jesuit Brother Alphonsus Rodriguez. Alphonsus encouraged Peter to consider missionary work in the Americas, helping him discern a vocation that would shape the rest of his life.

In 1610, Peter travelled to Cartagena, then an important centre of the transatlantic slave trade. After further studies, he was ordained a priest in 1616 and began a ministry that would continue for more than four decades.

“Slave of the Enslaved”

Peter Claver devoted himself particularly to the men, women and children arriving in Cartagena in terrible conditions. He boarded slave ships as soon as they entered the harbour, bringing food, medicine, clothing and assistance. With the help of interpreters, he also offered Christian instruction and the sacraments.

His ministry was remarkable because he did not treat the enslaved simply as people needing material assistance. He recognised their full human dignity and sought to accompany them spiritually and personally. He became known for his profound compassion and eventually described himself as a servant of the Africans forever.

A Lifetime of Compassion

For approximately forty years, Peter continued his ministry among enslaved people while also preaching to other members of Cartagena's society. Church sources say he baptised around 300,000 enslaved people during his missionary years.

In his final years, illness greatly limited his activity. He died in Cartagena on September 8, 1654. He was beatified in 1850 and canonised in 1888 alongside his friend Alphonsus Rodriguez.

Saint Peter Claver reminds Christians that faith must be expressed through concrete acts of mercy. His life challenges believers to recognise the dignity of every person, especially those who are marginalised, exploited or forgotten.
