HYDERABAD, November 4, 2026: Telangana Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) after a video showing two young Christian women being assaulted by a group of men in Almasguda village of Ranga Reddy district went viral on social media.
The incident reportedly occurred last month near the Dr B.R. Ambedkar statue in Almasguda, under the jurisdiction of Meerpet Police Station. The men confronted the women on suspicion of attempting to convert people to Christianity.
According to reports, the men accused the women of distributing religious books and pamphlets and offering chocolates to children to influence them. The women denied the accusations, explaining that they had visited the locality to meet a relative.
A video of the confrontation, circulated widely on social media, shows a man repeatedly slapping the women while verbally abusing and humiliating them. One of the women is heard pleading with the men to release her and explaining that she was visiting her aunt. The footage also captures the men questioning the contents of their bags and using derogatory language against them.
The incident drew condemnation from Christian organisations and community representatives, who demanded police intervention and legal action against those responsible. High Court advocate Sudheer Chatla was among those who approached the police, following which a formal complaint was lodged.
Meerpet Police have registered an FIR and launched an investigation. They are expected to examine the video footage and other available evidence to establish the circumstances of the incident and identify those involved.
Former Telangana minister and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLA Sabitha Indra Reddy condemned the assault and urged the Director General of Police to take appropriate action against those responsible. She stressed that complaints concerning religious activities must be addressed through constitutional and legal procedures rather than violence or intimidation.
Christian leaders and civil society representatives have called for an impartial investigation, the arrest of those involved and adequate protection for the women. A protest is also reportedly being planned to demand justice.
The incident has renewed concerns among Christian organisations over the use of religious conversion allegations to justify intimidation and violence. Community representatives have maintained that any complaints of unlawful activity must be investigated by the authorities and cannot justify physical assault or public humiliation.
The police investigation is expected to establish the facts and determine responsibility in the case.
