Goa, March 22, 2026: A series of Lenten concerts led by Fr Romeo Monteiro brought together worshippers across Goa this week, using sacred music to deepen reflection during the penitential season.
The programme, titled “Bhokti-gayonantlean Niyall” (Meditation through Sacred Music), was held at Holy Cross Church on March 19 and later at Santa Monica Convent on March 22, attracting large gatherings at both venues.
Addressing the audience, Fr Monteiro—Director of the Western Music Department at the Kala Academy Goa and Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman—highlighted the role of sacred music in Christian worship and formation. Referring to teachings of the Second Vatican Council, he noted that the Church continues to regard its musical tradition as an important means of spiritual engagement and reflection.
The concert featured a blend of classical liturgical compositions and local devotional music. Selections included works by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, alongside Konkani hymns that reflected Goa’s regional heritage. Organisers said the mix aimed to connect global Church traditions with local expressions of faith.
Around 60 performers—comprising choir members and instrumentalists—took part in the production, which included orchestral accompaniment with strings and wind instruments. The performances were conducted by Fr Monteiro.
The concluding concert in Old Goa was attended by Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão, along with Auxiliary Bishop Simião Fernandes and Bishop Emeritus Alex Dias. In his remarks, Cardinal Ferrão described the programme as a reflective experience that encouraged contemplation during Lent, and commended the performers for their preparation and presentation.
Organisers said the concerts were intended to offer an alternative form of Lenten observance, using music as a medium for prayer and reflection.
