Chennai, 3 October 2025: The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) in the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore has successfully completed two years of its customised day programme, implemented with the approval of the Archbishop. The initiative, designed to complement parish-level preparation, has been hailed as a valuable addition for enriching the faith life of adult candidates.
At the parish level, candidates undergo a month-long preparation covering 20 suggested themes. They are also encouraged to attend daily Mass, read at least one Gospel, learn about three saints, practise basic prayers, and pray the rosary daily. At the diocesan level, candidates are invited on the fourth Sunday of each month for further formation. Activities at the diocesan level include listening to convert stories or witness accounts, praying together in the chapel, participating in lectio divina, exploring the theological dimensions of a Christian calling, and touring the cathedral to understand its rich faith symbols and rituals.
The diocesan preparation culminates at the tomb of St. Thomas, where candidates surround the tomb with lit candles, profess the Creed, and receive a participant’s certificate and gift before departing with joy. Since its inception, the programme has prepared 349 adult candidates from 41 parishes for the sacraments.
The success of the initiative reflects the support of the Archbishop and the dedication of the team, including Mr. Harry, Mr. Victor Jones, Mrs. Ambuja, and Mrs. Pauline Rose, whose commitment to faith formation has been instrumental.
Votive Cross Distribution
Alongside RCIA, the Archdiocese has seen significant progress in faith formation through the distribution of votive crosses. The initiative began with first standard catechism children in parishes, who received “My First Cross” ceremonially at the altar from a priest. This practice was highlighted by Vatican News on 17 September 2024, which reported on the Archdiocese’s innovative catechetical efforts to deepen children’s faith.
As interest grew among the faithful, the programme expanded into a para-sacramental service where the theology of the cross was preached, and participants received it as “My Votive Cross.” In the past year, the initiative has gained momentum within the Archdiocese and across dioceses, with nearly 50,000 crosses distributed. The effort aims to reinstate the significance of these symbols, encouraging the faithful to embrace them as visible signs of their spiritual devotion.
