Vatican, July 31, 2026: Pope Leo XIV will make a pastoral visit to the Italian town of Assisi on Thursday, August 6, the Feast of the Transfiguration, where he will meet hundreds of young people, celebrate Mass, and hold meetings with local authorities and Church representatives.
The visit includes an encounter with participants of the "Go! Franciscan Youth Meeting”, being held in Assisi from August 3 to 6.
As per the programme released by the Holy See Press Office on Thursday, the Pope will depart the Vatican by helicopter at 8:00 AM and arrive in Assisi at 8:30 AM. He will be received by the Archbishop of Assisi, Felice Accrocca, along with Italian civil authorities.
He will then proceed to the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels to meet the Ministers General of the Franciscan Orders. At 8:45 AM, he will gather with young people in the Square of St. Mary of the Angels and respond to three of their questions.
Afterwards, at 9:15 AM, Pope Leo will greet representatives of the Franciscan Order – including members of the national committee responsible for organising the events marking the 800th anniversary of St. Francis’ death – in the convent cloister.
At 10:30 AM, Pope Leo XIV will celebrate Mass in the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels. At the conclusion of the celebration, a young person will offer words of thanks on behalf of those present.
The Pope is scheduled to depart Assisi by helicopter at approximately 12:15 PM and arrive back at the Vatican at 12:45 PM.
Young people meet St. Francis
The “Go! Franciscan Youth Meeting” is an international gathering in Assisi for young people between the ages of 18 and 33, including both believers and non-believers, from across Europe. The programme includes workshops, prayer, a music competition, and other activities.
The year 2026 marks the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis. To commemorate the occasion, Assisi has been hosting a series of events, liturgies, and gatherings throughout the year.
Pope's other appointments in August
The Office for the Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff has also announced Pope Leo XIV’s other liturgical engagements for the month of August.
Apart from the Assisi visit, the Pope will celebrate Mass at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 15, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, at the Pontifical Parish of St. Thomas of Villanova in Castel Gandolfo.
On Saturday, August 22, Pope Leo XIV will travel on a pastoral visit to the central Italian city of Rimini to take part in the 47th edition of the Meeting for Friendship among Peoples. He will celebrate Mass at the city’s port at 6:30 PM.
Later, on Saturday, August 29, the Pope will celebrate Mass and lead a procession at 6:00 PM at the Church of Our Lady of the Lake in Castel Gandolfo.
