Vatican City, 10 December 2025 — Pope Leo XIV used his weekly General Audience to invite the faithful to reflect on the meaning of death and the promise of eternal life, emphasising that meditation on the end of life helps believers discover the profound power of Christ’s Resurrection and the hope it brings to human existence.
Addressing pilgrims gathered in St Peter’s Square, the Pope noted that contemplation of mortality is not meant to instil fear but to orient human life toward the greater reality of eternal communion with God. He called on participants to see their earthly journey as a preparation for eternity, where the Resurrection of Jesus serves as the ultimate source of hope that transforms how believers live, love and serve others.
In his catechesis, Pope Leo highlighted that the mystery of Christ’s death and rising to new life opens a horizon of meaning that counteracts the existential anxieties of the modern world. Far from being a distant event, the Resurrection invites Christians to embed hope in daily life, trusting that life’s trials and sufferings are enveloped by the redeeming love of God.
The Pope’s reflections form part of the ongoing Jubilee 2025 catechesis cycle, centred on the theme “Jesus Christ, Our Hope,” which explores how belief in the Paschal Mystery — the death and Resurrection of Jesus — shapes Christian faith and sustains believers in times of doubt and hardship.
