CBCI Appeals for Peace in Middle East and Iran, Calls for Lenten Prayers

New Delhi, March 3, 2026: Expressing deep concern over the escalating tensions and ongoing conflict in the Middle East and Iran, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) mourned the loss of innocent lives and urged global leaders to pursue peace through dialogue.

In a statement issued from New Delhi, the CBCI said it was “profoundly saddened by the tragic loss of innocent lives, especially the vulnerable children caught in the midst of these hostilities.” The bishops extended heartfelt prayers to families grieving the loss of loved ones and prayed for the swift and full recovery of those injured.

The Conference urgently appealed to the leaders of all nations involved to engage in constructive dialogue to resolve the crisis and to “consciously choose peace over violence.”

Cardinal Anthony Poola, President of the CBCI, said, “Violence and conflict only breed further suffering and despair. We urge all global leaders to prioritize human dignity and work collaboratively towards an amicable resolution. True strength lies not in the use of force, but in the unwavering pursuit of lasting peace.”

As the Church observes the Holy Season of Lent, a time marked by spiritual reflection, fasting, and penance, the CBCI invited Christians across India to pray earnestly for peace in the world, calling on the faithful to unite in prayer for divine grace to heal afflicted regions and restore harmony among communities.
