Pope Leo XIV has called for prayers for all those suffering from war, while also marking several significant religious events during his address following the Sunday Regina Caeli.
Speaking from the Vatican, the Holy Father highlighted the Day of Prayer for the Church in China, observed on Saturday and instituted by Pope Benedict XVI. He invited the faithful to unite in prayer “as a sign of concern and affection for Chinese Catholics and their communion with the universal Church.”
“May the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary obtain for [Chinese Catholics] and for all of us the grace to be strong and joyful witnesses of the Gospel, even in the midst of trials, in order to always promote peace and harmony,” the Pope said.
He extended this prayer to “all peoples suffering from war,” urging courage and perseverance for those working towards peace through dialogue.
The Pope also recalled the beatification of Blessed Stanisław Streich, a Polish diocesan priest martyred in 1938 for his work with the poor and workers, which angered communist followers. Pope Leo expressed hope that his example would inspire priests to commit themselves fully to the Gospel and service.
Additionally, the Pontiff commemorated the anniversary of Laudato sì, Pope Francis’ landmark encyclical on care for the environment and the poor. He praised its global influence and recognised the efforts of the Laudato Sì Movement and others dedicated to its mission.
Pope Leo concluded by offering greetings and blessings to pilgrims and visitors from around the world, with special mention of groups from Spain, Poland, and various regions of Italy, including young confirmands and military marksmen.
He encouraged all present to continue striving for peace, unity, and care for creation.
