Pope Leo XIV Offers Prayers for Mothers and Calls for Christian Unity

Vatican City, May 10, 2026: Pope Leo XIV offered prayers and greetings for mothers around the world during his Regina Coeli address in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, marking Mother’s Day celebrated in many countries on the second Sunday of May.

Entrusting mothers to the care of the Virgin Mary, the Pope said, “Through the intercession of Mary, the Mother of Jesus and our Mother, let us pray with affection and gratitude for every mother, especially for those living in the most difficult conditions.”

The Pope also marked the annual “Day of Coptic-Catholic Friendship”, observed each year on 10 May, by extending greetings to Pope Tawadros II and the Coptic Orthodox Church.

“I extend a fraternal greeting to His Holiness Pope Tawadros II and assure my prayers for the entire beloved Coptic Church, in the hope that our journey of friendship may lead us to perfect unity in Christ,” Pope Leo said.

The Pope also praised the people of the Canary Islands for their welcoming spirit after authorities allowed passengers from the Hondius Cruise Ship, which had hantavirus patients on board, to disembark.

Expressing gratitude to the island communities, Pope Leo said he looked forward to meeting them during his upcoming apostolic visit to Spain next month.

The Vatican confirmed that the Pope will travel to Spain from 6 to 12 June. During the final days of the visit, he is scheduled to visit Tenerife and Gran Canaria, where he will meet migrants and organisations working to support them.

The Pope’s remarks combined appeals for solidarity, Christian unity, and compassion towards vulnerable people, particularly mothers and migrants facing hardship.
