Luanda, Africa, April 19, 2026: Pope Leo XIV has renewed his appeal for dialogue and peace in war-affected regions, expressing concern over escalating violence in Ukraine and encouraging diplomatic efforts in the Middle East.
Speaking during the Regina Coeli after Mass in Kilamba, Angola, the Pope voiced deep concern over intensified attacks on Ukraine, which continue to affect civilians.
“I deeply regret the recent intensification of attacks against Ukraine,” he said, assuring those suffering of his closeness and prayers. He urged that “weapons fall silent” and called for a renewed commitment to dialogue.
Recent strikes have reportedly killed civilians in several Ukrainian cities, following a brief Easter ceasefire marked by mutual accusations of violations.
Turning to the Middle East, the Pope described a recently announced truce in Lebanon as “a sign of hope,” offering relief to the population.
He encouraged continued diplomatic efforts to ensure a lasting end to hostilities across the region, amid ongoing violence and displacement linked to conflict.
Concluding his address, Pope Leo XIV invited the faithful to unite in prayer for peace, emphasising the need to foster love, justice and reconciliation despite suffering.
He expressed hope that faith would sustain people through hardship and contribute to building a more peaceful and just world.
