Pope at Angelus: God’s Plans Are Greater Than We Can Imagine

Vatican City, 20 September 2026: Pope Leo XIV has reminded the faithful that God’s plans are far greater than human understanding, urging Christians to trust in His mercy and abandon rivalry and resentment.

Speaking during the Sunday Angelus in St. Peter’s Square, the Pope reflected on Jesus’ parable of the labourers in the vineyard. He highlighted the words of the Prophet Isaiah: “My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways.”

Pope Leo said the Gospel parable reveals the generosity of God’s justice. The landowner pays workers who arrived at different times of the day the same amount, instructing the steward to begin with those who arrived last.

The Pope noted that the order was intentional, as it revealed that God’s goodness is offered to everyone, not only to those who believe they have earned more because they have worked longer.

He said the episode challenges human ideas of merit and calculation, reminding Christians that “the law of love” can bring greater joy, wisdom and hope when it replaces rivalry and competition.

Pope Leo also described the opportunity to work in God’s vineyard and serve His Kingdom as a grace. He stressed that there should be no room for envy or division when God’s “newness” breaks forth.

The Pope urged the faithful to seek the Lord, turn away from “crooked paths and wicked thoughts”, and trust in God’s mercy.

Concluding his reflection, Pope Leo invited the faithful to look to the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom he described as “a creature like us yet without blemish”. He said Mary can help Christians place their hope in God and entrust themselves to His mercy, so that God’s ways and thoughts may increasingly become their own.
