“Pedagogy Pro – Youth Ministry” Empowers Youth Leaders Across Tamil Nadu

Kottar, Tamil Nadu, June 13, 2025: The Youth Commission of the Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council (TNBC) conducted a 10-day intensive residential training programme titled “Pedagogy Pro – Youth Ministry” at the Bishop’s House campus in the Diocese of Kottar. Held from May 19 to 30, 2025, the programme aimed to equip young leaders and religious animators from across Tamil Nadu with a renewed vision, pastoral creativity, and a deep commitment to social transformation in their service to the youth.

The training commenced on the first day with a traditional parai dance performance, setting a culturally vibrant tone. Over the course of the ten days of the programme, several resource persons conducted insightful sessions on critical topics.

Fr. Joseph Santhosh addressed the topic “Youth Identity and the Pressing Challenges Faced by Young People Today”, while Dr. Leo Bright spoke on “The Personal Qualities Required of Youth Animators”.

Fr. Martin Yosu, former TNBC Youth Secretary, presented a comprehensive history of the Catholic youth movement in Tamil Nadu. Fr Jenith from Madha TV shared insights into AI and its applications in youth ministry.

Fr. Nelson and his team led an engaging session on drug abuse and rehabilitation methods, while Fr. Savarimuthu offered valuable inputs on fundamental rights and the importance of understanding civil law.

Fr. Simon, Youth Secretary of the Diocese of Kottar, spoke on the effective use of social media in youth ministry. Additionally, Mr. John Peter conducted a practical workshop on social analysis and context-based youth formation.

Bishop Nazarene Susai, Chairperson of the TNBC Youth Commission, offered a key reflection on Christus Vivit, the Apostolic Exhortation to the youth delivered by the late Pope Francis. He urged the participants to walk with the youth in faith, love, and mission. Fr. Edison, TNBC Youth Commission Secretary, introduced the Tamil Nadu youth movement’s policies and facilitated practical training on group leadership and organising youth initiatives.

A key highlight of the programme was its strong emphasis on field exposure. Participants visited nearby parishes to engage with youth and student groups, putting their newly acquired knowledge into practice in real-life settings. They also made a spiritual pilgrimage to Aralvaimozhi, visiting the historic places associated with Saint Devasahayam.

Daily Mass, community prayers, and spiritual reflections formed the core of each day of the programme. The evenings were enriched through nattupura kalai (folk art), music, games, and storytelling.

The programme concluded on May 30 with a Eucharistic celebration led by Bishop Susai, followed by a certificate distribution ceremony. The preceding evening featured a cultural night where participants showcased their learnings and Tamil heritage.

“Pedagogy Pro – Youth Ministry” marked more than just a training—it served as a call to transform the Church and society through youth who are formed, inspired, and sent forth with the fire of the Gospel. It reinforced the commitment of the church in Tamil Nadu to shaping a generation of faith-filled, justice-oriented youth leaders ready to transform society.
