VATICAN CITY, June 14, 2025: Pope Leo XIV met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Wednesday, June 11, in the study of the Paul VI Hall of the Vatican. During the meeting, the pontiff and the Secretary-General discussed strengthening cooperation between the Holy See and the U.N. on shared global priorities, including peacebuilding, sustainable development, climate action, and the ethical use of artificial intelligence.
Following his audience with the Pope, Guterres held further discussions at the Secretariat of State with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Holy See, and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations.
A statement from the Vatican mentioned that during the conversation in the Secretariat of State, Cardinal Parolin and Archbishop Gallagher expressed the Holy See’s support for the United Nations’ commitment to world peace. Some ongoing processes and upcoming summits organised by the United Nations were also discussed, as well as the difficulties the organisation faces in addressing current crises around the world. Specific situations of conflict and instability in various parts of the world were also discussed.
