Outrage Erupts Over Insult to St. Francis Xavier, Church Leaders Call for Respect and Restraint

Goa, April 22, 2027: Strong protests have emerged across the Upper Ghats region and parts of southern Maharashtra following alleged derogatory remarks against Saint Francis Xavier, venerated as “Goencho Saib.” Church leaders, clergy, and lay faithful have voiced deep concern, urging swift action while appealing for calm and communal harmony.

At the forefront of the response, Bishop Derek Fernandes described the remarks as “deeply offensive, morally unacceptable, and hurtful to the sentiments of millions.” He подчеркed that the revered missionary saint is not only central to Christian devotion but is also respected across religious communities for his legacy of service, compassion, and unity.

Calling for a response rooted in faith, the Bishop invoked the words of Jesus Christ, urging restraint over retaliation. “We recall, ‘Father, forgive him, for he does not know what he says,’” he said, adding that such statements reflect a lack of understanding of the saint’s enduring influence.

Echoing these sentiments, Fr. Nelson Pinto emphasised that respect for religious sentiments is foundational to a civilised society. He cautioned against the misuse of public platforms to incite division, instead calling for dialogue and mutual respect.

The Public Relations Office of the Belgaum diocese issued a strongly worded statement condemning the remarks as “intolerable” and expressing concern over the perceived lack of prompt action. It questioned whether similar statements targeting other faiths would be met with the same response, warning against the normalisation of offensive rhetoric.

Several clergy members, including Fr. Pramod Kumar, called for accountability while encouraging a spirit of forgiveness. They noted that while the Christian response is rooted in mercy, persistent divisive attitudes raise serious concerns about the erosion of social harmony.

Adding his voice, Fr. Joe Monteiro cautioned that such remarks risk undermining the secular and peaceful ethos of Goa, warning against ideologies that foster division.

Lay leaders also expressed anguish. Community representative Jerome Andrade described the remarks as “communal and hateful,” pointing to the deep devotion of thousands of pilgrims who visit Goa each year to venerate the relics of the saint, a shared heritage that transcends religious lines.

In a notable political response, Devraj Bardeskar condemned the remarks and called for action at both state and national levels. Stressing the importance of interreligious respect, he urged authorities, including Pramod Sawant, to address the matter seriously and safeguard communal harmony.

As tensions continue to simmer, Church and community leaders have united in appealing for restraint, accountability, and renewed commitment to interfaith respect. They reaffirmed that preserving harmony in a region known for its peaceful coexistence remains a shared responsibility, even as calls intensify for decisive action against speech that threatens the social fabric.
