Thrissur, April 22, 2026: The Kerala Regional Latin Catholic Council has expressed profound grief over the devastating fireworks accident at Mundathikkode, which claimed 14 lives and left more than 40 persons seriously injured, casting a shadow over festival preparations in the region.
Archbishop Varghese Chakkalakal, President of the Council, conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, describing the tragedy as a moment of collective sorrow for the entire state of Kerala. The accident occurred during preparations for Thrissur Pooram, one of the region’s most renowned cultural and religious celebrations.
In his message, the Archbishop assured prayers for the eternal repose of those who lost their lives and for the swift recovery of the injured. He also underscored the urgent need for accountability, calling on authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the mishap.
Highlighting growing concerns over safety during large-scale festivities, Archbishop Chakkalakal urged the government to enforce stringent safety protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
The tragedy has sparked widespread concern across Kerala, with increasing calls for stricter regulation and vigilance in the handling of fireworks during festival preparations, as communities grapple with the loss and seek assurances against similar disasters.
