In his presentation, titled “Jubilee Year 2025 - Pilgrims of Hope: Looking Toward 2033,” Fr. De Lima highlighted the late Pope Francis’ vision of the jubilee as a time of renewal, encounter, and mission. He explored the biblical roots of the jubilee and articulated its theological significance within the contemporary Indian context. Referring to the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), he underscored the importance of engaging in a triple dialogue with the poor, cultures, and religions.

Fr. De Lima proposed that the pastoral approach to celebrating the jubilee locally should prioritise prayer and engagement with the Word of God, particularly through Lectio Divina, which fosters reconciliation and forgiveness. As a Systematic Theologian, he urged that the language of the jubilee must resonate with the youth, reaching out to marginalised communities and empowering them. He concluded by reminding participants that as “pilgrims of hope,” they walk together towards the Lord alongside Mary, our Mother of Hope.

Introducing the theme of this year’s pastoral conference, Bishop Jose Chirackal, Chairman of the Theology and Doctrine Commission of the Northeast India Regional Bishops’ Council (NEIRBC), elaborated on its context and relevance for the region. Quoting the papal bull Hope Does Not Disappoint (spes non confundit), he highlighted 25 subtitles centred on hope. Citing Pope Francis, Bishop Chirackal emphasised that hope carries transformative power, especially in times of global uncertainty, suffering, and persistent evil. Echoing the late Holy Father, the auxiliary bishop called for solidarity, mercy, and a renewed commitment to the Gospel, radiating joy and hope within communities.

Bishop James Thoppil, General Secretary of the Northeast Bishops’ Council, recalled that the history of pastoral conferences in the region dates back to the time of the esteemed Emeritus Archbishop of Guwahati, Thomas Menamparampil. He described the conference as a gathering of the region’s Church leaders, including bishops and major superiors, who discuss a specific theme each year, often followed by a pastoral letter. Bishop Thoppil of Kohima further remarked that the pastoral conference has inspired other bishops’ councils across the country.

Archbishop John Moolachira, President of the Northeast Bishops’ Council, welcomed participants and encouraged them to walk hand in hand as “pilgrims of hope.” The conference will conclude with a business session on 4 September 2025.

The Northeast India Regional Bishops’ Council (NEIRBC) is one of 16 regional bishops’ councils in the country, comprising 12 dioceses and 3 archdioceses spread across seven states of Northeast India. The NEIRBC serves as a vital hub for fostering collaboration and unity among the dioceses, addressing regional challenges, and promoting the spiritual and social well-being of its communities. The council’s secretariat is supported by Deputy Secretary Fr. Amalraj, along with 21 Regional Commissions that focus on various aspects of Church life, including education, health, youth ministry, social justice, and social communication.
