Shimoga, Sept. 2, 2025: The Diocese of Shimoga’s Commission for Liturgy organised a two-day seminar on “Fidelity to the Liturgical Norms in Christian Liturgy” on August 24 and 25 at Sannidhi, the diocesan pastoral centre in Shimoga. The sessions, held for religious sisters on the first day and diocesan priests on the second, aimed to deepen their understanding of liturgical norms and encourage faithful adherence to the Church’s traditions.

THE SOUL OF THE LITURGY: MUSIC IN THE SERVICE OF THE SACRED

Most Rev. Dr. Francis Serrao, SJ, Bishop of Shimoga, welcomed the participants on both days, while Fr. Nelson D’Souza, Diocesan Director for Liturgy, introduced the resource person, Rev. Fr. Dr. Antony Dias, Professor of Liturgy at St. Peter’s Pontifical Seminary, Bengaluru.

During the first session of the programme, Fr. Antony emphasised that the Holy Mass is not a theatrical performance but a profound source of spiritual nourishment. He underlined the importance of following the prescribed norms and rubrics of the liturgy faithfully, without personal interpretations.

In the second session, Fr. Antony elaborated on the four principal parts of the Holy Mass—the Introductory Rites, the Liturgy of the Word, the Liturgy of the Eucharist (Communion), and the Concluding Rites. He provided in-depth explanations of each part to enhance the participants’ understanding of their significance.

The final session of the seminar addressed common liturgical aberrations observed in the Church. During this session, Fr. Antony urged all the participants to remain vigilant and to celebrate the Holy Eucharist in a dignified and worthy manner.

The seminar concluded in the evening, leaving participants inspired to foster greater fidelity to the Church’s liturgical practices. Around 50 sisters from the diocese attended the seminar on the first day, while 50 priests participated on the second.
