Roing, Arunachal Pradesh, June 13, 2025: A group of students from Krick and Boury Memorial (KBM) School, Tezu, run by the Diocese of Miao in Arunachal Pradesh, received a regional award and a cash prize of ₹10,000 at the 3rd Edition of the Wipro Earthian Regional Awards held on June 12 at Anchal Samity Hall, Roing. The award ceremony was hosted by AMYAA, an NGO based in Roing.
The regional award recognised the outstanding contributions of the students in the field of sustainability during the Wipro Earthian Sustainability Education Programme 2024. A total of 30 schools from the districts of Dibang Valley, Lower Dibang Valley, Lohit, and Anjaw in Arunachal Pradesh participated in the regional phase of this national-level programme. The initiative focused on three core themes: "Sustainability in Biodiversity", "Sustainability in Waste Management", and "Sustainability in Water".
Mr. A. Athiko, Principal of VKV School, Roing, who was the Chief Guest at the award function, congratulated the winners. In his address, he stated that “the resources we use today from Mother Earth should be passed on to the next generation because we are not masters but only custodians of this one Earth.” He also described the Wipro Earthian Sustainability Education Programme as “a step in the right direction towards building a sustainable, healthier, and greener tomorrow”.
Mr. Obang Langkam, Block Education Officer, Roing, who was the special guest at the event, emphasised that the award should not merely serve as a decorative recognition but should "lead to concrete steps and action to be the voice of the community that cares for Mother Earth.”
In his address, Mr. Eja Pulu, Coordinator of Elopa Etugu – Community for ECO Cultural Preserve, who was the guest of honour at the ceremony, highlighted how deforestation has altered river courses, taken away agricultural land, caused migration, and disrupted communities.
“Development initiatives should consider that building infrastructures like dams can have devastating consequences on people and their identity. Instead, we should promote ecotourism, research tourism, and nature walks that help sustain the beauty and biodiversity of the area,” he said.
The award ceremony featured testimonials from several awardees, including the national awardee, Global Valley School, Roing.
At the district level, four schools—Police Welfare School, Tezu; Government Higher Secondary School, Wakro; Government Secondary School, Mayu-2, Roing; and Kendriya Vidyalaya, Roing—were recognised for their initiatives on various sustainability themes. Each school received ₹2,500 along with participation certificates.
The event concluded with Intya Public School, Roing, being awarded the title of "Best Eco School Club" across the four participating districts.
The event was not just an award ceremony but a compelling call to action for youth, educators, and communities to build a more sustainable and resilient future.
