Landslide Claims Many Lives in Wayanad District in Kerala

Wayanad, July 31, 2024: Landslides in the Mundakkai region in Wayanad district of Kerala on July 30 early morning has caused widespread destruction to life and property in several towns including Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala and Noolpuzha. 


The calamity has claimed 200 lives so far with a majority of victims being migrant workers who worked in the nearby tea estates. More than 218 people are still reported missing and 225 left injured. The National Disaster Response Squad (NDRF), Indian Navy and Army units and fire force personnels are leading the search and rescue operations with assistance from various local and state level organisations.  


45 relief camps are set up in Wayanad by the Kerala government where over 3000 people have been accommodated. The Calicut diocese have turned its churches and schools in the vicinity as relief camps under the guidance of Bishop Varghese Chakkalakal of Calicut.
