Kerala’s Capuchin Charismatic Leader Declared Servant of God

Kannur, 15 July 2024: Fr. Armand Madavath Capuchin was raised to the position of Servant of God by the Church on 13 July 2024. The ceremony was held at Vimalagiri Retreat Centre Pattaram, Iritty, Kannur in which almost 5000 people participated. Most Rev. Mar Joseph Pamplani, Archbishop of Thalassery diocese of the Syro –Malabar Church in Kerala was the main celebrant and Most Rev. Mar George Valiyamattam and Most Rev. Mar George Njaralakat, former archbishops of Thalassery diocese joined him as co-celebrants.  


Fr. Armand was born on November 25, 1930, in Marangattupalli, Kerala. He entered the Capuchin order after school and made his vows on May 13, 1954.  

He was one of the leaders of the charismatic movement in Kerala, and founded the Assisi Renewal Center in Bharananganam, which became Kerala’s first charismatic center. He preached his first charismatic retreat there on September 24, 1976. 


His life spanned seventy-one years on Earth, which were epitomized by a deep connection to the Trinitarian love which he joyfully shared to all with Franciscan simplicity. His life and ministry continue to inspire many, being rooted in unwavering faith and profound love for God and humanity. 

A general meeting followed the official ceremony which was opened by the Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs, Shri. George Kurien.  Representatives from various dioceses, religious congregations and provincial ministers from various provinces of the Capuchin order were present at the ceremony. Manoj George, a well-known violinist, infused the event with his violin fusion.
