Naples, Italy, July 23, 2024: In a remarkable achievement, Sr. Tessy Vazhakkoottathil, a 49-year-old nun from Kerala's Kottapuram diocese, has been elected as the Mother General of the Catechist Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a congregation founded in Naples, Italy in 1905 by St. Julia Salzano.
Sr. Tessy, born on March 20, 1975, to Thomas Vazhakoottathil and Ammini at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Kara, made her first vows on August 6, 1998. Her elevation to the top post is a testament to her dedication and service to the congregation.
The Catechist Sisters are renowned for their selfless service to the most vulnerable sections of society, with a presence in nine countries, including Italy, Peru, Brazil, Indonesia, Canada, Colombia, Philippines, and India.
Sr. Tessy's election, which took place at the Chapter held in Casoria, Italy on July 22, 2024, marks a significant milestone for the congregation and the Indian Catholic community. Her leadership is expected to inspire and guide the sisters in their mission to serve the marginalized and oppressed.
