A Champion of Ecology and Justice
As Chairman of the Diocesan Commission on Ecology, parish priest of Chicalim, and Assistant Professor of Botany at St. Joseph Vaz College, he united faith, science, and action. Whether opposing projects that threatened Goa’s ecological balance, advocating for wetlands conservation, or mentoring young environmental leaders, Fr. Bolmax stood firmly on the side of creation. His commitment earned him recognition as one of Goa’s most respected environmental voices.
Seeds of Change Across Goa
The seeds he planted continue to bear fruit across the state. In Chicalim, where he inspired countless ecological initiatives, faith communities embraced eco-spirituality retreats, mangrove restoration drives, wetland conservation campaigns, and sustainable farming programmes. The Chicalim Youth Farmers’ Club, which grew into a powerful platform for ecological awareness and agricultural education, even expanded its mission internationally through an overseas chapter.
His influence is visible in initiatives that encourage children to plant trees, students to learn sustainable farming, and communities to celebrate the Season of Creation with meaningful ecological action. Educational institutions such as St. Joseph Vaz College continue promoting environmental awareness through studies of Goa’s unique Khazan heritage and scientific engagement with emerging technologies. Parish communities across Goa have increasingly embraced ecological responsibility through Green Guardians programmes, farming initiatives, conservation projects, and integral ecology gatherings.

Protecting Goa’s Heritage, Land and People
Fr. Bolmax understood that protecting nature meant protecting culture and community. The celebrations marking 400 years of Christian faith in Chicalim carried a powerful message of environmental stewardship. For him, heritage was not only found in churches and traditions but also in paddy fields, mangroves, rivers, forests, and the landscapes that define Goa’s identity.
He consistently reminded people that development should never come at the cost of ecological destruction, loss of livelihoods, or the erosion of local heritage. His ministry inspired communities to view environmental protection not as an optional concern but as a moral responsibility.
A Legacy That Continues to Grow
Today, the environmental movement in Goa mourns the loss of a courageous leader. Yet his legacy remains alive in every sapling planted, every wetland protected, every young farmer encouraged, and every parish that embraces care for creation.
On this World Environment Day, the greatest tribute to Fr. Bolmax Pereira is not merely to remember him but to continue his mission. The shepherd may have gone home to God, but the path he showed remains clear: to love the Earth, defend the vulnerable, and care for creation as a sacred gift entrusted to humanity.
