Kalaburagi, Karnataka, September 23, 2025 – The Diocese of Gulbarga celebrated the Jubilee of Laity and Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) on September 21, with an event at the Mother of Divine Grace Cathedral in Kalaburagi. Held under the theme “Be devoted to one another in love” (Romans 12:10), the celebration aimed to honour the contributions of the laity and BEC units to the spiritual life of the Church in the region. 120 participants from across the diocese participated in the day-long event.
The festivities began with a solemn procession into the cathedral. The procession was led by Bp. Robert Miranda, Bishop of Gulbarga Diocese, who reverently carried the Word of God to the altar, symbolising its central and guiding role in Church life. The inaugural song performed by the residential girls of the Cathedral set a joyful tone for the day, following which Fr. Clary D’Souza delivered the welcome address.
In his keynote address, Bishop Miranda urged the faithful to actively participate in strengthening their BECs. He also emphasised the vital role of the laity in fostering faith and service within their communities.
The morning session featured faithful from various parishes sharing their experiences and contributions within their local BECs and pastoral ministries, highlighting the collaborative spirit across the diocese.
Key sessions during the event deepened participants’ understanding of Church life and leadership. Fr. Maxim Dias, the Regional Secretary for the BEC Commission, delivered a powerful talk on the importance of communion, participation, and mission within BECs. This was followed by an insightful presentation on Church Leadership by Dr. Isabella Xavier, the Regional Joint Secretary for the SC & ST Commission, who underscored the laity’s responsibility to be true witnesses of Christ in society.
The afternoon featured lively cultural programmes, showcasing the talents of youth and children. These programmes included thematic dance performances by the hostel girls and a biblical dance by the Cathedral Women's Cell. Fr Maxim then led a forward-looking session on follow-up actions, which was endorsed by Bishop Miranda, emphasising the need for continued collaboration. 0
The day culminated with the Holy Eucharist, celebrated by Bishop Miranda, uniting all participants in thanksgiving for the graces received during this Jubilee Year.
Fr. Anthony Selvam MSFS delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all who contributed to the day’s success. The faithful departed with a renewed sense of purpose and a shared mission to live as beacons of Christ’s love within their families, parishes, and wider communities.
