John Brittas Seeks President’s Intervention Over Alleged Police Assault in Delhi

NEW DELHI, October 12, 2026: Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas has sought President Droupadi Murmu’s intervention and an independent investigation into an alleged police assault on him during a media interaction in Delhi, raising concerns over parliamentary dignity, constitutional freedoms and police accountability.

In a letter to the President, Brittas called for a comprehensive report from the Union Government and the Delhi government, along with an impartial inquiry into the incident. He described the alleged police action as a serious violation of democratic rights and the dignity of Parliament.

Recounting the incident, Brittas said he reached Connaught Place around 12.30 pm after learning that youth activists were being assaulted and detained. He went there to witness an interaction between journalists and the activists.

According to his account, personnel from the Delhi Police and the Central Reserve Police Force allegedly manhandled and dragged several journalists, including senior reporters from established media organisations. He further claimed that a police personnel assaulted a journalist and another officer struck the journalist with a baton before taking him towards a police vehicle.

Brittas alleged that he was also pushed towards the vehicle without being given an opportunity to establish his identity as a sitting Member of Parliament.

He claimed that the physical assault continued inside the vehicle, where police personnel pinned him to his seat and subjected him to degrading treatment. He further alleged that he was abandoned by the roadside while the vehicle was moving.

“Nothing can justify the use of physical violence against me in the circumstances described,” Brittas wrote, linking the incident to the broader handling of the ongoing protests.

The MP also expressed concern over reports of detainees being denied or made to wait for food and essential medication, describing such treatment as inhumane.

He maintained that demands for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner were being expressed through democratic mobilisation and political dissent, which should not invite the use of force.

Emphasising the constitutional right to peaceful protest, Brittas said the incident raised questions about the protection of parliamentary privilege, freedom of expression and the rule of law. He also referred to a Supreme Court directive concerning safeguards for peaceful protesters, including protection against illegal detention, internet connectivity, access to railway services and freedom of movement.

Brittas urged the authorities to examine video recordings, vehicle records, police logs and other documentary evidence to establish the sequence of events and identify those responsible. He called for appropriate action against personnel found guilty, as well as accountability among supervisory officers wherever warranted.

The MP appealed to the President to ensure a transparent and impartial investigation, establish the facts and uphold constitutional freedoms and democratic accountability.
