Indore Catechists Renew Commitment to Faith Formation and Witness

INDORE, September 2, 2026: Catechists of the Diocese of Indore were encouraged to see their ministry not merely as teaching the faith but as a vocation to witness to Christ and lead others towards a personal encounter with him.

The Catechetical Commission of the Diocese of Indore organised a Catechism Teachers’ Training Seminar on August 26 at St. Paul Primary School, Indore. The programme was conducted under the guidance of Commission Director Fr. Jolly John, with Fr. Isaac SDV serving as the resource person.

The seminar, held on the theme “Identity and Vocation of a Catechist: Called to Teach, Chosen to Witness,” invited participants to rediscover catechesis as a divine calling and a mission of evangelisation. Drawing on the biblical examples of Samuel, Mary and the disciples, Fr. Isaac emphasised that Jesus calls those who are willing and available to serve.

An interactive DEM activity—Disciple, Evangeliser and Missionary—was used to help participants reflect on the identity and mission of a catechist. The seminar also identified prayer, the Eucharist, Scripture and charity as four essential pillars of catechist spirituality.

The training highlighted the need for proper preparation, punctuality and confidentiality in catechetical ministry. Catechists were also reminded to respect every child as an image of God, create a safe and welcoming environment, pursue continuous formation and, above all, live the Gospel they seek to teach.

During the concluding session, Fr. Jolly John reviewed the catechetical experiences and achievements of various parishes and urged catechists to strengthen their commitment to faith formation. He also encouraged regular participation in the Sacraments and greater attention to recognising and appreciating children’s progress in faith formation.

Bishop Thomas Mathew of Indore attended the gathering and offered his encouragement and blessing. He expressed gratitude to the catechists for their generous and willing service in sharing and strengthening the faith of the community.
