Historic Moment: Dedication and Blessing of Christ the Light of the World Cathedral, Bongaigaon

BONGAIGAON, 4 March, 2025 – In a momentous event marking the Silver Jubilee of the Diocese of Bongaigaon, the grand dedication and blessing of the Christ the Light of the World Cathedral were solemnised with immense joy and reverence on March 2. The cathedral, whose construction began two years ago, now stands as a beacon of faith and unity, signifying 25 years since the creation of the Diocese from the Archdiocese of Guwahati.


The auspicious occasion was graced by all 15 Bishops of Northeast India, who gathered in Bongaigaon for the Northeast India Regional Bishops’ Council (NEIRBC) meeting. This was a historic moment, as it marked the first time in 25 years that all the Bishops of the region had come together in the Diocese. Their last visit was during the episcopal ordination of Rt. Rev. Thomas Pullopillil and the formal inauguration of the Diocese.


On March 2nd, the Bishops were accorded a grand welcome at the new Cathedral. A vibrant procession featuring diverse tribal dances showcased the rich cultural heritage of Northeast India, setting the tone for an unforgettable celebration. An overwhelming gathering of over 10,000 faithful, including priests, religious brothers, sisters, and laypeople from across the region, bore witness to this historic event.


Following the ceremonial welcome, the Bishops, vested in their liturgical attire, proceeded in a solemn procession to the entrance of the Cathedral. The dedication and blessing ceremony was led by His Lordship, Rt. Rev. Thomas Pullopillil, the Bishop of Bongaigaon, who was the principal celebrant of the Eucharistic Celebration. The Mass was concelebrated by all the Bishops and numerous priests.


The homily was delivered by His Grace, Archbishop John Moolachira, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Guwahati and President of NEIRBC. In his address, he highlighted the unwavering faith and dedication of the clergy and the laity in bringing this magnificent Cathedral to life. He emphasised the importance of the Cathedral as not just a place of worship but also a symbol of unity and spiritual renewal.


The felicitation ceremony followed the Eucharistic Celebration, during which various dignitaries, benefactors, and contributors were honoured for their support and commitment to the Cathedral’s completion. The program was enriched with cultural performances, including traditional Bodo, Oraon, Santali, and Assamese Bihu dances, which added to the festive spirit of the day.


The celebration concluded with a grand fellowship meal at the seminary campus, fostering a spirit of communion and fraternity among the clergy, religious, and faithful.This momentous event stands as a testament to the unwavering faith and collective efforts of the Diocese of Bongaigaon. The newly dedicated Cathedral, a symbol of faith, resilience, and devotion, now stands as a spiritual home for generations to come.
