Varanasi, October 22, 2025: The Jubilee Year National Laity Seminar, organised by the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) National Laity Council, was held at Nav Sadhana Regional Pastoral Centre, Varanasi, from October 14 to 16, 2025, on the theme “Laity – Pilgrims of Hope on a Synodal Path.”
The gathering brought together 84 delegates from across India, most of them Diocesan Laity Commission Secretaries, for reflection and dialogue on the role of the laity in the Church and society.
The seminar was inaugurated with the Eucharistic celebration led by Bishop Eugene Joseph of Varanasi, Chairman of the CCBI Laity Commission. He urged participants to walk together in hope and unity, encouraging them to contribute actively to the life and mission of the Church.
Throughout the seminar, speakers and resource persons highlighted the significance of synodality as a way of being Church, marked by listening, collaboration, and shared responsibility. Fr. Paul Pudussery CSC emphasised that walking the synodal path requires understanding, openness, and concrete action. Ms. Clara Fernandes invited participants to reflect on fulfilling the Church’s mission in the present Indian context, while Advocate G. Tripathi spoke on the constitutional rights and responsibilities of citizens, addressing issues affecting Christians in different regions.
The participants also reflected on the life and witness of St. Lazarus Devasahayam, the newly declared Patron of the Laity in India, inspiring renewed commitment to faith in everyday life. The National Laity Commission’s annual report, presented by Fr. Anthony Fernandes, outlined the progress of lay leadership training programmes and urged diocesan commissions to continue building capacities at the grassroots level. Mr. Adrian Rosario from the National Laity Council presented the Pastoral Plan, calling for collaboration and consistent follow-up in every region.
The seminar concluded with reflections and planning sessions where regional groups shared ideas for strengthening lay involvement in parishes and social initiatives. In his closing message, Bishop Eugene Joseph encouraged all participants to embrace the synodal spirit as a journey of faith and service, shaping a renewed and participatory Church.
