Bengaluru, 4 May 2026: Addressing the growing need for clear direction on clergy engagement in media and digital platforms, a much-needed pastoral guide was released by the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) on 3 May during the National Synodal Assembly held in Bengaluru. The book was released by Archbishop Peter Machado, Vice-President of the CCBI, in the presence of Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrao, President of the CCBI, and Cardinal Anthony Poola, Archbishop of Hyderabad, along with other CCBI office-bearers.
At a time when digital platforms are shaping faith conversations and influencing public perception, the book, compiled by Rev. Dr. Nigel Barrett and Rev. Dr. Cyril Victor along with their team, seeks to bring clarity to how clergy and Church leaders engage in media and online spaces—outlining what is appropriate, what is not, and how to communicate responsibly.
Structured as both a vision guide and a practical handbook, it offers a comprehensive pastoral framework for clergy, religious, and lay leaders navigating today’s digital landscape.
The book sets out clear Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for social media engagement, addressing everyday questions faced by priests and Church communicators—from what may be shared to how to respond, the boundaries to be observed, and ways to maintain credibility and accountability online.
It also addresses key challenges such as misinformation, polarisation, and digital fatigue, while offering practical direction on content planning, crisis communication, and fostering a consistent and unified Church presence.
Rooted in the Church’s communication tradition and adapted to India’s pastoral realities, the book aims to equip the Church to engage more effectively and confidently in a rapidly evolving digital environment.
