Cochin, May 3, 2026 — Dr. Thomas Panackal, a revered priest, former Vicar General, and a distinguished leader known for his decades of pastoral and administrative service, passed away on Sunday afternoon. He was 80.
Dr. Panackal breathed his last at 1:20 p.m. on May 3, leaving behind a rich legacy of faithful ministry, scholarly excellence, and dedicated leadership in the Church.
Born on April 16, 1946, in Chellanam, Cochin, to Gregory and Esabellamma, he displayed an early commitment to academic and spiritual formation. He completed his schooling at St. Mary's High School, Chellanam, and pursued higher education at University College, Dharwad. He later undertook priestly formation in philosophy at Tiruchirappalli and theology at Mangaluru, earning several academic qualifications, including Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Philosophy, Bachelor of Theology, and Doctor of Divinity.
He was ordained a deacon on March 19, 1976, and was elevated to the priesthood on May 5, 1976, beginning a remarkable ministry that would span five decades.
Throughout his priestly life, Dr. Panackal served the faithful in numerous parishes across Kerala, including Thrikaripur, Payyannur, Cherukkunnu, Chundale, Pilathara, Kozhikode, and Malappuram. His pastoral zeal, accessibility, and commitment to the spiritual growth of his parishioners earned him widespread affection and respect.
Between 1981 and 1986, he pursued higher studies in Rome, further enriching his theological and pastoral expertise. Upon his return, he continued to serve the Church with renewed dedication in various important capacities.
Dr. Panackal held the office of Vicar General from 2012 to 2021, guiding the diocese with wisdom and prudence. He also served as Corporate Manager from 2013 to 2020, making notable contributions to the educational and administrative apostolates of the Church.
Church leaders, clergy, religious, and laity have expressed profound sorrow at his passing, remembering him as a humble shepherd, a learned scholar, and an inspiring mentor.
According to sources, Dr. Panackal had suffered a minor stroke a few months ago. A recent infection reportedly led to multiple organ failure.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced later. His passing marks the end of an era of dedicated service, but his witness of faith and leadership will continue to inspire generations.
