CCBI Formation Programme in Goa Calls for Renewed Vision in Priestly and Religious Training

Benaulim, Goa, April 26, 2026: A week-long refresher programme organised by the CCBI Vocation Commission has underscored the need for a paradigm shift in priestly and religious formation, urging Church leaders to move beyond institutional maintenance toward a more holistic and transformative approach.

Held at Shanti Sadan, Benaulim, from April 20 to 25, the programme brought together 25 diocesan and religious formators from across India for reflection, dialogue, and renewal.

The sessions were led by noted resource persons, including Jesuit Fr. Joye James, Richard D'Souza, and Charles Leon. Participants also benefited from the insights of Bishop Simão Purificação Fernandes, Auxiliary Bishop of Goa and Daman, and Sr. Margaret Julie Thumpa, Superior General of the Indian Missionary Daughters. Fr. Domingo Gonsalves coordinated the programme.

A central theme that emerged throughout the gathering was the urgent need to reimagine formation in response to contemporary pastoral realities. Participants emphasised that formation must focus on nurturing individuals who are deeply rooted in Christ, emotionally mature, and pastorally sensitive.

The programme explored three major dimensions of formation. The first centred on the personal life of the formator. Speakers stressed that effective formators must be authentic witnesses of the Gospel, embodying prayer, integrity, simplicity, and compassion. Availability, sincerity, and a genuine concern for those in formation were highlighted as indispensable qualities.

The second area addressed the structures of formation itself. Participants called for greater flexibility, collaboration, and openness within seminaries and formation houses. They emphasised the importance of engaging candidates with real-life pastoral situations, fostering stronger family connections, and integrating psychological and spiritual development. Building inclusive communities supported by competent formation teams was seen as essential for nurturing healthy vocations.

The final focus was on the formation of candidates. Discussions highlighted the need to cultivate responsibility, freedom, self-awareness, and authentic relationships. True formation, participants noted, should lead candidates from fear to love, from self-centredness to communion, and from mere compliance to joyful service.

The programme concluded with a renewed commitment among formators to embrace this transformative vision. As the Church faces new challenges, participants affirmed that it must form ministers who are not only intellectually prepared but also compassionate, resilient, and deeply grounded in faith.
