Bhutan, Dec 10, 2025: Strength, discipline, and faith converged on the international stage as Fr. Denis Dominic Joseph participated in the SBKF 12th International Games held from 14–17 November 2025 at the Bhutan Olympic Stadium, Thimphu, where he secured gold medals in powerlifting at the International Tournament.
Having begun his powerlifting journey almost two and a half years ago, Fr. Denis has steadily advanced in the sport. Earlier, his rise was marked by a major victory at the WRPF National Powerlifting Championship held in Pune in December 2024, where he emerged victorious and gained recognition for his commitment.
One of the most moving moments of this international championship was when Fr. Denis stood on the podium in his cassock with a medal resting upon it—a dream he had quietly cherished for many years. He shared that this Jubilee Year awakened in him a special desire to revive medals on his cassock, not for personal glory, but as a visible witness that priesthood and human strength can walk together, and that faith does not compete with discipline, but strengthens it.
Speaking to Catholic Connect, he said, “I offer this achievement to the Jubilee Year, and especially to our Priests and Religious Parents, whose prayers, sacrifices, and guidance continue to inspire and strengthen me every day. As I stood on the international stage, I felt the grace of God and the support of our entire Church with me.”
Mother Mary — My Coach and My Strength
What made this victory even more profound was that Fr. Denis did not have a personal coach physically present with him during the competition. Instead, he entrusted himself entirely to the loving guidance of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Speaking to Catholic Connect, he said, “This time, Mother Mary herself was my Coach, my strength, my protector, and my everything.”
He also conveyed his gratitude, extending thanks to those who supported him, including his family and friends, throughout his powerlifting journey.
Fr. Denis serves as Assistant Parish Priest at Saint Ignatius Church, Khadki, Pune. His interest in the sport grew from a desire to evangelise to the youth through health and fitness. He shared that his faith accompanied him closely during the competition, noting that he wore a rosary around his neck, which gave him strength and the protection of Mother Mary.
In addition to his pastoral ministry, Fr. Denis also serves as Principal of Saint Joseph Boys High School in Khadki.
