“But I am thankful to the almighty for blessing me today.” — Samson After Guiding India Into T20 World Cup Semis

Kolkata, March 1 2026: In a night that blended sporting brilliance with quiet faith in the iconic Eden Gardens, Sanju Samson steered India into the semi-finals of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, delivering a match-winning performance in front of a packed capacity of 68000 cricket fans will be remembered for years to come.

Chasing a challenging 196 set by the West Indies cricket team, India reached 199/5 in 19.2 overs to seal a five-wicket victory with four balls remaining in the Super Eights clash. The result secured India’s place in the last four, where they will face England cricket team in a high-stakes semi-final encounter on 5th March 2026.

Samson was named Player of the Match for his composed and decisive innings under pressure. Born on November 11, 1994, in Pulluvila, a coastal village near Vizhinjam in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram district, Samson rose from humble beginnings in a Malayali Christian family to become one of India’s most elegant stroke-makers. In recent times, he has emerged as a prominent Christian figure in Indian cricket to guide the national side into a crucial phase of a World Cup campaign.

A Knock for the Ages

With wickets falling at regular intervals during the chase, Samson anchored the innings with maturity and patience. Unlike his typically aggressive starts, he adjusted his tempo to match the situation, absorbing pressure before unleashing decisive strokes when it mattered most.

The defining moment came when he launched the winning runs over the boundary ropes with a towering six. As Eden Gardens erupted in celebration, Samson did not rush into exuberant theatrics. Instead, in a goosebump-inducing scene, he knelt on the pitch, looked toward the skies in silent prayer, and made the Sign of the Cross — a gesture that spoke of gratitude beyond the scoreboard. Earlier, upon reaching his half-century, he had similarly paused to make the Sign of the Cross, publicly acknowledging his faith before resuming his innings.

With this historic knock, he helped India beat the West Indies by five wickets to qualify for the T20 2026 Cricket World Cup semifinal.

“It means the whole world to me…”

In his post-match presentation, Samson reflected on the journey that led him to this defining moment:

"[What does the knock mean to you?] It means the whole world to me. Right from the day I started playing, started dreaming of playing for the country, this is the knock I was waiting for. Had a very special journey. Had a lot of ups and downs. kept doubting myself, thinking will I make it? But I am thankful to the almighty for blessing me today.

[On approaching the knock] I've been playing this format for many years. Learned from a lot of greats like Kohli, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni. That helped with my experience. I've noticed how the greats play, and seeing how they change their game according to situations. Last game we were batting first so i was going from ball one, but this game it was different. Every time I tried to go too high we were losing wickets. Didn't think I would play this special knock ,but yeah this is one of the greatest days of my life. Just stayed in the present, played the ball on the merit."

His words echoed both relief and gratitude, underscoring a career marked by perseverance, self-doubt, and resilience.

Faith and Cricket on the World Stage

Samson’s gesture of kneeling in prayer before celebrating has resonated with many, symbolising a moment where faith was visibly placed above fame. For a nation watching with bated breath, it was a rare glimpse into the spiritual grounding of a cricketer who has often let his bat do the talking.

His achievement comes at a time when expressions of faith have also been visible in Indian women’s cricket. In 2025, Jemimah Rodrigues led India to a record-breaking 339-run chase against Australia women's national cricket team, the highest successful run chase in Women’s ODI history and the first-ever 300-plus chase in a World Cup knockout. After that historic innings, Rodrigues publicly thanked Jesus for the victory, marking another powerful intersection of faith and sport on the global stage.

As India now prepares for its semi-final showdown against England, Samson’s innings stands not merely as a statistical triumph but as a testimony to perseverance, belief, and composure under pressure.

On a charged Kolkata night, beneath roaring floodlights and thunderous applause, Sanju Samson’s bat carried India forward — and in a quiet, kneeling moment, he reminded millions that gratitude can shine just as brightly as glory.
