Bishop George Pallipparambil Appointed to Vatican Council for Catechesis

MIAO, Arunachal Pradesh, August 7 2026: Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop George Pallipparambil SDB, Bishop of Miao, to the International Council for Catechesis (Co.In.Cat.), an advisory body of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelization.

The five-year appointment brings the missionary experience of a bishop serving one of India’s most remote dioceses into the Church’s international reflection on catechesis and evangelization.

The appointment was formally communicated to Bishop Pallipparambil in a letter dated July 30 from Archbishop Rino Fisichella, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization.

According to the letter, the Vatican Secretariat of State informed the Dicastery on July 5 that Pope Leo XIV had approved the appointment following a request from the Dicastery.

Archbishop Fisichella expressed confidence that Bishop Pallipparambil’s pastoral and missionary experience would contribute significantly to the Council’s work, particularly in addressing the challenges facing catechesis in different cultural and social contexts.

The letter was countersigned by Monsignor Graham Bell, Under-Secretary responsible for the Dicastery’s Secretariat.

The International Council for Catechesis serves as a consultative body to the Section for Fundamental Questions Regarding Evangelization in the World within the Dicastery for Evangelization. It assists the Vatican in reflecting on catechetical priorities and initiatives and brings together pastoral, theological and missionary experience from different parts of the universal Church.

Bishop Pallipparambil’s appointment therefore gives the Council the perspective of an Indian missionary bishop working in a culturally diverse and geographically challenging pastoral setting.

A Salesian of Don Bosco, Bishop Pallipparambil has served the Diocese of Miao in Arunachal Pradesh, in northeastern India, where the Church ministers among indigenous communities living across mountainous and remote areas near the international borders with Myanmar and China.

The missionary character of Miao has shaped the bishop’s pastoral ministry, which includes evangelisation as well as education, healthcare, social development and the accompaniment of local communities.

His experience of nurturing Christian communities in a multicultural environment is expected to contribute to the Council’s reflection on catechesis and the transmission of faith in diverse contexts.

The appointment has been welcomed with joy by the Diocese of Miao. Priests, religious and lay faithful have expressed gratitude for the recognition given to their bishop and have assured him of their prayers as he assumes the new responsibility.

For the local Church, the appointment is also seen as an affirmation of the missionary witness of the Diocese of Miao. A Church serving communities in a remote frontier region will now have a voice in an international body contributing to the development of catechetical reflection for the universal Church.

Catechesis remains an essential dimension of evangelisation, helping people encounter Christ, understand the faith and integrate it into their daily lives. The task has become increasingly complex amid rapid social, cultural and technological changes.

Bishop Pallipparambil’s five-year term on the International Council for Catechesis will provide an opportunity for the experience of the Church in northeast India to contribute to this wider conversation.

His appointment highlights how the experiences of local Churches, particularly those working in mission territories and among indigenous communities, can enrich the universal Church’s understanding of evangelisation and catechesis.
