Belgaum, Karnataka, March 21, 2026 — In a visible expression of Christian unity during the Lenten season, churches across Belgaum came together for an Ecumenical Way of the Cross held on March 19 at the New India Church of God, Vaibhav Nagar, Belagavi.
Organised by the Diocese of Belgaum, the prayer service brought together pastors and faithful from various denominations, fostering a spirit of shared devotion and reflection on the Passion of Christ.
A central feature of the evening was the meditation on the 14 Scriptural Stations of the Cross, introduced by Pope St. John Paul II. In a participatory format, seven pastors from different churches each led two stations, offering Scripture-based reflections that invited the faithful into a deeper contemplation of Christ’s suffering and sacrifice.
Approximately 120 participants attended the devotion, prayerfully journeying through the Stations with reverence and attentiveness. The gathering reflected not only a shared Lenten observance but also a growing commitment to ecumenical fellowship in the region.
Concluding the programme, Bishop Derek highlighted the significance of the shared reflections, noting that such moments affirm the common faith Christians profess.
“In the light of all the meditations given by various pastors, we can truly say we profess the same faith in Jesus Christ, and in His Passion, Death and Resurrection,” he said.
The ecumenical gathering stood as a testimony to unity in diversity, offering a meaningful and grace-filled Lenten experience while strengthening bonds among Christian communities in Belgaum.
