Asansol Diocese Launches ‘Mission 2030’ Pastoral Plan at Chrism Mass

Asansol, West Bengal, April 1, 2026 — In a significant step towards shaping its future pastoral vision, the Diocese of Asansol formally unveiled its first diocesan pastoral plan, “Together in Faith and Service: Mission 2030,” during the Chrism Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral on April 1.

The solemn Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Archbishop Elias Frank, with Bishop Cyprian Monis concelebrating alongside nearly 60 priests and religious. The liturgy drew a large gathering of religious sisters and lay faithful, reflecting the unity of the diocesan community.

In his homily, Archbishop Frank underscored the universal call to serve as witnesses through priestly life and ministry. He emphasised that prayer remains the foundation of priesthood, noting that deeper surrender to God leads to greater fruitfulness in pastoral service. He also urged priests to remain accessible to the faithful, while offering a brief catechesis on the significance and history of the Chrism Mass, including the blessing and use of the Holy Oils.

Following the Eucharist, Fr Avinash Kumar presented an overview of the development of Mission 2030. He explained that the process was initiated by Fr Joe Xavier, who conducted a three-day orientation for clergy, focusing on crafting a plan responsive to the specific needs of the diocese.

Subsequently, diocesan commissions were organised into working groups, with further guidance provided by Archbishop Frank and Fr I. P. Sarto. A three-member committee was later appointed to advance the process, ensuring broad participation from priests, religious, and lay faithful. Through consultations, collaborative drafting, and a series of online meetings, the diocesan community engaged in a shared process of discernment.

Rooted in Christ’s mandate, “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Mt 28:19), Mission 2030 offers a structured pastoral framework aimed at strengthening evangelisation, fostering vibrant faith communities, and responding to contemporary pastoral challenges. Central to the plan is the principle of synodality—walking together as the People of God—encouraging shared responsibility and active participation across all levels of the Church.

The pastoral plan is organised through 14 diocesan commissions and four apostolates, addressing both spiritual and social dimensions of ecclesial life. It envisions ongoing evaluation and renewal, ensuring that the mission remains dynamic and responsive.

Archbishop Frank officially released the document in the presence of clergy, religious, and laity, describing it as a long-awaited roadmap for the diocese. He cautioned that without concrete implementation, the plan would remain merely theoretical. Expressing gratitude to all who contributed to its preparation, he voiced hope that Mission 2030 would bear lasting fruit in strengthening Gospel proclamation and glorifying God.

The launch marks a new chapter for the Diocese of Asansol, calling every member of the faithful to active participation in the Church’s mission in the years ahead.
