Kochi, June 26, 2026: The Archdiocese of Verapoly combined sport with social awareness by organising the Archbishop Dr. Joseph Kelanthara Memorial Anti-Drug Football Tournament 2026, reaffirming its commitment to promoting a drug-free society through youth engagement and healthy recreational activities.
The tournament concluded with a closing ceremony inaugurated by Fr. Ebijin Arakkal, Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Verapoly. Addressing the gathering, Anti T. J., Head of the Department of Physical Education at St. Albert’s College, underscored the vital role of sports in shaping responsible young citizens and steering them away from substance abuse. He highlighted how participation in sports fosters discipline, teamwork and healthy lifestyles.
The function was presided over by Rajeev Patric, President of the Archdiocese of Verapoly, as part of the archdiocesan anti-drug campaign conducted in memory of the late Archbishop Dr. Joseph Kelanthara.
In the tournament, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Ochanthuruth emerged as champions, while KCYM St. Joseph’s Church, Vadakkekotta secured the runners-up position. KCYM St. Sebastian’s Church, Gandhinagar finished third.
Individual awards were also presented in recognition of outstanding performances. Joseph Carlo of St. Joseph’s Church, Vadakkekotta was named the tournament’s best player, while Ishan Joseph of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Ochanthuruth received the award for best goalkeeper.
Among those present were KCYM Verapoly Archdiocese General Secretary Rose Mary K. J., Sports Forum Convener Amal George, Secretary Arun Sebastian and Treasurer Joyson P. J. Former ICYM President Adv. Antony Judy, executive committee members and youth representatives from various parish units of the archdiocese also participated in the programme.
Organisers said the tournament sought to harness the unifying power of sports to spread awareness about the dangers of drug abuse. By bringing together young people from across the archdiocese, the event promoted teamwork, community spirit and collective responsibility in addressing the growing challenge of substance abuse.
