Archbishop Emeritus Thomas Menamparampil Makes Homecoming Visit to Dibrugarh Cathedral

Dibrugarh, February 22, 2026 — The faithful of Sacred Heart Cathedral witnessed a deeply moving moment on Sunday as Archbishop Thomas Menamparampil made an unexpected homecoming visit and presided at the Eucharistic celebration, rekindling memories of his pastoral leadership in the region.

The 89-year-old Archbishop Emeritus, who served as shepherd of the Diocese of Dibrugarh from 1981 to 1992, received a warm and affectionate welcome from parishioners. Introducing him to the congregation, Parish Priest Fr. Cyril Purty described the visiting prelate as one who “truly belongs to this diocese,” recalling his dedicated service and fatherly guidance during a formative period in the local Church’s history.

Expressing joy at returning to Dibrugarh, Archbishop Menamparampil reflected on his years of ministry and conveyed his enduring affection for the people of the diocese. His presence at the altar was widely regarded by the faithful as both a spiritual blessing and a living link to the Church’s heritage in the region.

In his homily, the Archbishop urged the faithful to live authentic Christian lives rooted in love, peace and forgiveness. Emphasising the importance of Scripture, he encouraged regular reflection on the Word of God as a guide to understanding Christ’s message and mission.

Highlighting reconciliation as the foundation of social harmony, he called on communities to grow together in mutual respect. He also encouraged believers, regardless of profession or social standing, to share messages of hope and peace with people of other faiths, noting that Christian witness is most powerfully expressed through action.

The surprise visit enriched the Sunday liturgy and fostered a strong sense of gratitude and continuity among the faithful. Following the Mass, parishioners gathered to greet the Archbishop Emeritus, seek his blessings and commemorate the occasion, reflecting the enduring bond he continues to share with the people of Dibrugarh.
