Archbishop Anil Couto Leads Delegation to Discuss Christian Community Concerns with Delhi Lieutenant Governor

New Delhi, June 21, 2026: A delegation led by Archbishop Anil J. T. Couto met with Taranjit Singh Sandhu at the Lieutenant Governor’s official residence on June 20 to raise a range of issues affecting the Christian community in the national capital.

The three-member delegation comprised Archbishop Couto, human rights lawyer Tehmina Arora, and A. C. Michael. The meeting was described as cordial and constructive, with the Lieutenant Governor taking keen interest in understanding the concerns of the Christian community under his jurisdiction.

Among the key issues highlighted was the shortage of burial grounds in Delhi. The delegation pointed out that inadequate burial facilities have, in some cases, compelled Christian families to opt for cremation, a practice that does not align with their religious traditions. Responding to the concern, the Lieutenant Governor assured the delegation that the matter would be taken up with the relevant authorities.

The delegation also drew attention to delays in approvals and sanctions related to the construction of churches, educational institutions, healthcare centres and social service facilities. Concerns regarding the renewal of land leases for Christian institutions were likewise presented. The Lieutenant Governor assured the representatives that these matters would be examined and addressed.

Another issue raised during the meeting was the prolonged vacancy in the Delhi Minorities Commission, which has remained without appointed members for more than two years. The Lieutenant Governor assured the delegation that he would discuss the matter with the Delhi Chief Minister.

The discussion also touched upon incidents of violence and discrimination against Christians. During the exchange, the Lieutenant Governor expressed concern over reports of religious conversions in Punjab. In response, the delegation clarified that there was no evidence of forced conversions and noted that, despite anti-conversion legislation being in force in more than a dozen states, there have been no known convictions related to forced conversions in the country.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Lieutenant Governor proposed a follow-up discussion to examine the issues raised in greater depth and explore possible solutions.

The delegation expressed gratitude for the warm reception and hospitality extended by the Lieutenant Governor and his staff, describing the interaction as a positive step toward addressing the concerns of the Christian community in Delhi.
