Davanagere, Karnataka, August 31, 2025 — The Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Health in Harihar witnessed a massive influx of pilgrims on Saturday as the annual feast celebrations commenced with the traditional flag hoisting ceremony.
Dr. Duming Dias, Bishop of the Diocese of Karwar, inaugurated the nine-day festivities by hoisting the flag. The Basilica Rector, Fr. George K. A., welcomed the Bishop and the faithful gathered for the occasion.
In his message, Bishop Dias urged the devotees to embrace the values of Mother Mary, describing her as the one who wipes the tears of the distressed. “Mother Mary – Our Mother of Hope” was the theme of his homily during the solemn high Mass, concelebrated by several diocesan priests.
Devotion and participation
Thousands of devotees from across Karnataka and neighbouring states thronged the Basilica, many dressed in saffron attire, as a mark of faith and tradition. The sheer inflow of pilgrims led to heavy traffic congestion across the city, underlining the scale of devotion to Harihar Matha.
Following the Eucharistic celebration, priests blessed devotees by placing their hands on their heads, invoking spiritual comfort and healing. The day concluded with the traditional Anna Santharapane (community meal), in which pilgrims joined together, sharing food and fellowship.
Prayers for peace
During the service, prayers were offered for global peace, particularly for war-torn nations and their leaders. Special prayers were also dedicated to the faithful who had gathered for Eucharistic adoration, reaffirming the Basilica’s role as a centre of faith and intercession.
The annual feast, one of the largest Marian pilgrimages in Karnataka, will continue with novenas, Eucharistic celebrations, and devotional programmes until its grand conclusion.
A live broadcast of the event was made available for devotees unable to attend in person
