A Historic Act of Faith and Hope: Philippines Consecrated to Divine Mercy

MANILA, May 2, 2025: On April 27, 2025, Divine Mercy Sunday, the Catholic bishops of the Philippines consecrated the nation to the Divine Mercy as part of the ongoing celebrations for the Jubilee Year. This historic event made the Philippines the first country in the world to be consecrated to Divine Mercy. The consecration was marked by Masses held across the nation, during which the faithful recited the Prayer of Consecration to the Divine Mercy in place of the General Intercessions.

Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), had announced the consecration earlier in April, describing it as a “collective response of faith and hope” in light of growing global tensions, political corruption, and threats to family life and moral truth.

The consecration served as a profound call to entrust the nation’s future to God’s mercy, with bishops and priests emphasising the importance of faith, trust, and prayer amid adversity. As read in CBCPNews, Cardinal David explained that “this act of entrusting our nation to the Divine Mercy is not just symbolic — it is a real cry from our hearts for healing, renewal, and peace.”

The significance of the consecration was deeply felt among the faithful across the country, as they united in prayer for their families, communities, and leaders. Parishes throughout the archipelago offered the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, Eucharistic Adoration, and opportunities for confession, providing various ways for the faithful to spiritually prepare for the consecration.

In consecrating the nation, the Church in the Philippines affirmed that true transformation begins not with human strength, but with hearts renewed by God’s grace. The national consecration to Divine Mercy calls on Filipinos to trust more deeply, forgive more freely, and hope more boldly in the God whose mercy endures forever. As the Jubilee Year progresses, this momentous event stands as a powerful reminder of the need for spiritual renewal and the transformative power of mercy in shaping a nation's future.
