2,000 Young People Gather for Sacred Heart Theological College Youth Fest in Shillong

Shillong, September 28, 2026: Around 2,000 young people from diverse ethnic and linguistic communities gathered at Sacred Heart Theological College, Mawlai, Shillong, on September 27 for the Annual Youth Fest, held under the theme, “Take Courage; I Have Overcome the World” (Jn 16:33).

The participants came from 34 centres served by the college through the Sunday apostolate ministry of the Brothers in parishes and communities across the region. They represented Khasi, Hindi, Naga, Kuki, Garo, Mizo, Santhali, Nepali and Boro communities.

The day began with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist presided over by Fr Paul Olphindro Lyngkot, SDB, Rector and Novice Master of St Dominic Savio Novitiate, Don Bosco Sunnyside Community.

In his homily, Fr Paul encouraged the young people to respect and obey their parents and elders and remain faithful to the teachings of the Church. He urged them to resist evil and the temptations they encounter through contemporary culture and social media, stressing the importance of courage and a close relationship with God.

Vincent H. Pala, President of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee, also addressed the gathering. He called on the youth to become the hope and strength of society, stressing that they need not wait for the future to take responsibility. He encouraged them to pursue their aspirations with humility and to use social media responsibly.

The animation sessions were conducted in three language groups—Khasi, Hindi and English. Br Quirinus War Khyllew, SDB, Fr George Shining Lyngkhoi, SDB, and Br Ankit Xalxo, SDB, animated the respective groups on the theme of the Youth Fest.

The afternoon cultural programme was attended by Gavin Miguel Mylliem, MLA of Sohra Constituency, as chief guest, and Pius Ranee, Executive Director of the North East Society for Agroecology Support (NESFAS), as guest of honour.

The Youth Fest was organised under the leadership of Fr. Sunil Barla, SDB, Youth Animator of Sacred Heart Theological College. Br. Firstbornson Jyrwa, SDB, served as coordinator, assisted by Br. Jeniberth Sangma, SDB.

The gathering provided the young participants an opportunity to strengthen their faith, celebrate cultural diversity and build friendships while reflecting on courage, cooperation and responsible participation in society.
