June 07, 2026:
As the world observes World Food Safety Day on 7 June, the occasion serves as a reminder that food is not merely a commodity but a precious gift from God that sustains life, strengthens communities, and reflects our shared responsibility towards one another.
The theme of food safety calls humanity to recognise that every meal carries with it a responsibility — from those who cultivate the land and prepare food to those who serve and consume it. Safe food is essential for good health, human dignity, and the protection of the most vulnerable members of society.
The Catholic Church has consistently upheld the belief that access to safe and nutritious food is closely linked to justice, compassion, and care for creation. The words of Jesus, “I was hungry and you gave me food” (Matthew 25:35), remind Christians that caring for the hungry and ensuring their well-being is a fundamental expression of faith in action.
In many parts of the world, millions continue to suffer due to hunger, food contamination, poor nutrition, and unequal access to safe meals. World Food Safety Day invites communities to look beyond the availability of food and reflect on whether the food reaching every person is healthy, safe, and dignified.
Catholic institutions, schools, healthcare centres, and charitable organisations play a vital role in promoting awareness about hygiene, nutrition, responsible consumption, and sustainable practices. Through education, outreach programmes, and service to marginalised communities, the Church continues its mission of protecting life in all its forms.
The responsibility of ensuring food safety begins in every home. Simple actions such as reducing food waste, maintaining cleanliness, respecting natural resources, and sharing with those in need become acts of stewardship and gratitude towards God’s creation.
World Food Safety Day is therefore not only a global observance but also a spiritual invitation — to value the food we receive, respect those who produce it, protect the environment that provides it, and work towards a world where no person is deprived of safe and nourishing food.
As we give thanks for our daily bread, may we also commit ourselves to building a society where every table reflects care, justice, and the love of Christ.
