June 6, 2026:The Catholic Church does not prohibit Catholics from marrying Christians of other denominations or people of other faiths. In fact, the Church has established provisions that allow such marriages under certain conditions.
Yet while these marriages are possible—and many are loving and successful—the Church continues to encourage Catholics to marry fellow Catholics.
Why?
Because marriage eventually raises questions that no couple can afford to ignore.
How Will We Get Married?
Even before the wedding day, practical questions emerge.
Will the wedding take place in a Catholic church? Another place of worship? Will there be one ceremony or multiple ceremonies to honour both families?
What may seem like a logistical decision often reveals deeper questions about faith, identity, and commitment.
How Much Should I Compromise?
Every healthy relationship requires compromise. But when it comes to faith, where is the line between compromise and conviction?
If your faith teaches one thing and your spouse's tradition teaches another, what gives way? How much should either person adjust? Which beliefs are non-negotiable?
These conversations can be uncomfortable, but avoiding them rarely makes them disappear.
What Will We Teach Our Children?
This is where differences often become most visible.
Will our child be baptised as an infant? Will they receive First Communion and Confirmation? Will they be taught that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist? What will we teach them about the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Rosary?
What if one parent believes baptism should happen later? What if the other follows a different religion altogether and hopes to pass on its teachings and practices?
Children naturally look to their parents for clarity. That can become difficult when parents themselves hold different answers.
Which Faith Will Shape Our Home?
Faith is not just something we believe. It is something we live.
Will Sundays revolve around Mass? Which religious festivals will be celebrated? What prayers will be taught? Which traditions will become part of family life?
Over time, a home develops a spiritual identity. The question is: what will that identity be?
Who Decides What's True?
At some point, deeper questions arise.
Will children be taught to follow the Catholic Church's teachings? Which interpretation of Scripture will guide the family? What will they learn about the Church, the sacraments, salvation, and the role of faith in everyday life?
These are not abstract theological debates. They influence how a family understands God and lives out its beliefs.
More Than Finding Someone to Love
Many Catholics happily build lasting marriages with Christians of other denominations and people of other faiths. Yet the Church encourages couples to consider, before saying "I do," how they will navigate questions of worship, children, religious traditions, and faith formation. Its encouragement to marry within the faith is not a rejection of other marriages, but a recognition that a shared faith often brings greater clarity and unity when these questions eventually arise.
