WIF Gathering in Bengaluru Highlights Grassroots Leadership and Workers’ Rights

Bengaluru, May 22, 2026: Strengthening grassroots leadership and ensuring greater protection for workers and vulnerable communities were among the central themes discussed during a national gathering organised by the Workers India Federation at Subhodana, KROSS, Bengaluru.

Held on May 18 and 19, the two-day programme brought together bishops, priests, religious, regional coordinators, and labour representatives from across India to reflect on the challenges faced by workers and to explore ways of advancing social justice and human dignity in the labour sector.

The inaugural session was attended by Archbishop Peter Machado of Bangalore, Bishop Vincent Mar Paulos of Trivandrum, and Bishop Edward Barretto of Darjeeling, who underscored the Church’s continuing commitment to the welfare and empowerment of workers.

A major highlight of the gathering was a session titled “Grassroot Leadership: Empowering the ‘Worker-Prophet’ in the Social and Political Realm,” led by Bishop Vincent Mar Paulos. The presentation focused on nurturing leadership rooted in justice, dignity, and active participation, encouraging workers to become agents of social transformation within society and public life.

Another keynote address, “From Vulnerability to Security: Navigating Rights and Social Protection,” was delivered by Bishop Alex Vadakkumthala. The session examined issues related to labour rights, social security, and the growing vulnerabilities faced by workers, particularly those in unorganised and marginalised sectors.

Representatives from the federation’s 13 regional units presented reports highlighting initiatives undertaken across the country to support and empower workers. The gathering also heard reports from the National Domestic Workers Movement and the Christian Workers Movement, both of which continue to advocate for labour dignity and social protection.

The election of a new Governing Council for the Workers India Federation marked an important moment during the programme, reaffirming the organisation’s commitment to promoting workers’ rights and strengthening grassroots engagement across the nation.

Participants described the gathering as an opportunity to renew the Church’s mission of accompanying workers and responding to the social realities faced by labour communities in contemporary India.
