Koilamoila, Assam, August 6, 2026: Every community has moments that test the values it professes. For the faithful of Koilamoila Parish in Assam's Chirang district, one such moment arrived quietly during a regular prayer gathering in December 2025. It did not begin with a plan or a project. It began with the story of a woman whose silent struggles had remained unseen for far too long.
A Village Bound Together by Faith
Koilamoila is a well-known village in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bongaigaon, situated near the India–Bhutan border. Deeply rooted in rich cultural traditions, strong community life and agricultural livelihood, the village is home to people whose lives revolve around the fields and forests. The people are simple, deeply religious and faithful.

Established in 2001, Koilamoila Parish consists mainly of first-generation Christians. Most of the faithful belong to the Boro community, along with Oraon and Santhal tribes, and live harmoniously among people of other faiths, including Hindus and Muslims, as well as Assamese, Rajbongshi and Bengali communities. Entrusted to the Capuchin Fathers, the parish has grown into a vibrant faith community with 15 village churches.
Over the years, the Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs), also known as Small Christian Communities (SCCs), have helped strengthen not only the spiritual lives of the faithful but also their unity, participation and mutual care.
A Story Shared in Prayer
During a regular meeting and prayer service of the St. Lucas BEC Unit in December 2025, one of the members raised the concern of Ms. Roslima Basumatary, a widow who is also hearing-impaired. The sudden death of her husband had left her alone with two young children, facing a painful and difficult life in Koilamoila village.
Living in isolation and burdened by grief, Ms. Roslima struggled silently. When she shared her present situation with deep emotion, her words revealed not only her material poverty but also the emotional and social suffering she carried each day. Those gathered for prayer could no longer look at her hardship as someone else's burden.
When Faith Called for a Response
The members reflected on the words of St. Paul: "If one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honoured, all the members share its joy" (1 Corinthians 12). Rather than allowing the reflection to end with the prayer meeting, they discerned a concrete response.
Moved by compassion and a sense of shared responsibility, they decided to support Ms. Roslima both in cash and in kind. They shared their limited resources, offered voluntary labour and mobilised local support. Each contribution, however small, became part of a common effort born out of faith and solidarity.
Hope, One Brick at a Time
Within a matter of weeks, the St. Lucas BEC Unit successfully constructed a simple and safe house for Ms. Roslima Basumatary. For her and her two young children, it became far more than a roof over their heads. It restored dignity, security and hope for the future.
The initiative became a powerful witness of faith in action, showing that a BEC is not merely a structure for prayer and meetings but a living community that responds to real-life struggles with love and solidarity.
Though the growth of BECs in Koilamoila Parish was slow in the beginning, today they have become vibrant and active across the parish. They participate actively in parish and village-level activities, addressing both the spiritual and material needs of the faithful. This intervention is one of the many fruits of the BEC movement, which continues to transform the parish into a caring, united and mission-oriented community.
The experience of the St. Lucas BEC Unit stands as a testimony that when faith, compassion and community come together, even the most painful situations can be transformed into stories of hope and new beginnings.
